  • Vegas crashes when exporting to quick time .mov

Posted by Shawn Bossick on December 5, 2012 at 6:32 am

    Hello all,

I just updated my QuickTime today (which I never use within Vegas)
I also updated it to Pro. I installed the Avid DNxHD codec, I’ve heard so much about within Vegas users. Every-time I go to render a .mov file Vegas Crashes ? It starts but will not finish.

Another weird artifact is when I pull up the render settings, then chose QuickTime & click customize, the window freezes half of the time, it won’t let me choose any of the tabs to control render settings. I’ll have to click the Esc tab wait for it to close then try it again, & when the render window does come up, I will have to wait 10 seconds before I can change anything, or it will freeze.

I’ve tried in the past to render .mov files but for some reason it won’t render, with the DNxHD codec or not, it just won’t render to .mov unless it’s a very short clip then sometimes it works & sometimes it crashes.

I noticed that when it does work, & I go to windows explorer to look at the clip, 1 there is no picture thumb nail there, the icons there that says .mov but there is no picture of one of my frames. when I open it in windows media player only the audio will play, when I open it in QuickTime it’s OK

Can anyone help ? I can’t figure this out ?

    Thanks in advance!

Only uninstall that new Quicktime player version and go back to the one
you had before. I presume you are using Vegas 11?

    Thanks Steve for answering!

Even before I installed the new updated version, QuickTime would crash when rendering. This is one of the Reasons why I updated QuickTime to pro, was for this very reason, however nothing changed. I can’t render .mov files. Vegas crashes.

And yes I am using 11 why ? is that the problem ?

    Thanks!

    ok, i see.
Yeah, its kinda part of the problem, Vegas 11 was a very trouble-some
release in this area and others. But everything is back on stream
and rock solid with Vegas 12.
Alright, for a solid investment i would recommend you grab a copy of
Vegas 12. I know its probably not what you wanted to hear or even
a quick solution, but im all out of solutions for Vegas 11 ills..lol

Yea, as much as I love Vegas Pro and hate to say this, the fix for Vegas Pro 11.0 problems is to cut your losses and to upgrade to Vegas Prop 12.0. I won’t even add an “lol” because it’s no laughing matter, Vegas Pro 11.0 just never quite stabalized like other releases did, probably because it was the first release to incorporate GPU acceleration on the timeline and I bet that caused a lot of code to be changed.

My advice is to download the trial of Vegas Pro 12.0 and if it solves your QuickTime problem, then buy it. I work with QuickTime all the time and have no problems rendering QuickTime files in a variety of formats and I also have QuickTime Pro. No issues with it at all in Vegas Pro 12.0.

I had to add the lol John, Because i am so pi**ed at the BAD rap
Vegas 11 has cast on the Vegas reputation, laughing it off is the
best thing for me to do. Thank goodness Vegas 12 corrected the
    mess that was.

Agreed. That probably sounded worse than I meant it. I really didn’t mean anything buy it other than it is sad.

I know I’m jumping in late here but this thread crosses over an issue I currently have. I animate in Carrara Pro. I import into Vegas Pro 10 (I own 11 but was afraid to install because 10 runs great).
I can’t use Carrara Pro 8 64 bit because I was using using Quicktime animaton codec to render. There is no ” Real” 64 bit Quicktime for windows from what I understand. I don’t even see it as a render option when I open the 64 Bit version, but I do see when I open the 32 bit version of Carrara. I’ve had crashes during render (in Carrara) and beleive quicktime is the problem because it will render to 100% then fail to finish or crash.
If you guys are using Quicktime in 64 bit vegas, how does vegas get around the fact there is no 64 bit Quicktime for Windows7.
Or do I just have this all wrong?
    Thanks
    Brad
