Vegas and Lt/Rt Audio
Not getting much action on this in the Basics Forum so thought I’d try here. I’ve had no issues with creating 5.1 AC-3 files, but haven’t needed a Lt/Rt until now. Is this even possible in Vegas? Is the Dolby 2.0 option Lo/Ro, or Lt/Rt? Thanks for any help.

Yea, I saw this on the basics forum but I don’t really know the answer. 🙁 I’ve read the Sony help file and it seems that it should be possible looking at the AC3 menus but I couldn’t tell you exactly how to do it.
In looking at the Custom properties for Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro, on the Audio Service tab it seems like the Audio coding mode of: 3/1 (L,C,R,Ls) and unchecking “Enable LFE” should be the 4 channels used in Lt/Rt, but I’m not sure. Then on the Ext. Bitstream tab you could Enable extended bitstream information and set Stereo downmix preference to Lt/Rt downmix preferred, but I have no idea if this is correct. Nor do I have any way to test this (sorry).

Thanks, John. Yes, the helpfile is strangely vague on everything to do with Dolby and downmixing. I’ve looked at those same parameters you’ve listed and wondered if that’s the ticket, but I’m still not sure. I’m reading through all the settings descriptions on the Dolby site to see if that will shed any light on it. One user from the Vegas forum a few years ago said that using the downmix to wav and selecting the “stereo downmix” option in the channels section creates a file that behaves like a Lt/Rt when run through a Dolby decoder even though it’s not a Dolby-encoded file. This makes some sense since even a normal Lo/Ro will exhibit some form of L-C-R-S behavior when played back through the decoder. I’ll contact Sony support and see if anybody there knows the inside scoop. My guess is that their Dolby plugin is not capable of creating a true Pro Logic II file as that probably would have cost a lot more in licensing fees. In any event, I’m still researching and experimenting and will report back if I learn anything significant.

I sent a support message to Sony three days ago and haven’t heard anything from them. I haven’t used their direct support much. Is that typical for them?

Did you get an automated message back that gave you some suggestions? If you did, you must reply to that or else they will consider that the suggestions solved your problem and close the problem ticket.

No, I just got an automated response, with a case number, that stated “your question has been received,” along with a link to view my question. I just looked at it, and added “waiting for a response” to the question field and submitted it again. Pretty convoluted, I must say.
