Howdy, I just picked up a brand new Dell to run vegas 9.0. Running vista 64, with a 940 intel cpu, and 12gb of memory… I was hoping for some fast rendering… but it’s not!

When I examine the processes, vegas only uses up to 1.032 gigs of memory, and the cpu utilization is never over 30%. Mind you, the total memory used is 3gb… leaving something just shy of 9gb available for useage.

I understand that 32bit programs can use at most ~3gb of memory, but I am certain my OS is 64bit, therefore I would think that 32bit programs (vegas 9.0 studio), could use up to 3gb, and the os would allocate any other processes to the rest of the memory….

The rendering is not slow, but I think it could be faster, what can I do to make the most of the system that just broke my bank account?

    Thanks ahead of time!

P.S. max thread is set to 1, and memory limit is set to 0 under options/preferences…… still only using 1gb of memory give or take…

People often buy more ram than they’ll actually use. My thinking is that Vegas not sucking up ram isn’t your problem, it’s the CPU. Vegas should be using a good chunk of the CPU when it’s rendering. 12gb of ram will not help Vegas render faster.

If you’re on a 64 bit OS, you should consider trying out the 64 bit Vegas 9. It won’t cost you anything.

Tip to anyone, don’t “break your bank account” on overpriced ram. A friend of mine just ordered a Dell with 12gb of ram and his isn’t even using a whole gig because he just edits short projects. Thankfully he’s primarily a photographer and those Raw files in Photoshop suck down ram like lemonade.

Well, I did not buy pro, only the pro platinum studio version…. seems like I should have coughed up the extra bucks. I download pro 64 (no native 64 bit vegas software other than pro), and see what kind of difference it makes. As for buying too much memory, I don’t think that’s possible… this is vista after all 😉

problem you need to split your video into segments and render seperately open 4 diff vegas windows then it will take up all your resources

I absolutely concur on the overpriced RAM. Like cruise ships, Dell counts on making money from the impulsive/”convenient” extras. I bought my RAM from Crucial and saved a bundle. Works for me ’cause I run tons of DMCC apps at the same time.

Folks, the bottleneck was not the cpu, it was the software. I tried out vegas pro 9 64-bit…. with nearly identical parameter values, the 64-bit version drained my computer resources… after some tweaking, I was able to have vegas consume 11gigs of memory, and the rendering was >1X !!! Five minute video rendered in 4 min.

In regards to over-pricing accessories, keep in mind that in order for the silly warranty to work, Dell will give you headaches with third-party purchases… I know they should not (in fact, it is illegal for them to do so unless they can prove that the third-party product caused the problem), I have had to deal with this sort of issue time and time again. The price of additional memory from Dell is not just for the memory, but rather, for the memory and warranty coverage…. I have no problem dropping an extra 3% to make sure that the warranty is entirely trouble free. Then again, I fully understand why you would want to purchase it third party, if I hada little exta time on my hands, that is exactly what I would be doing.

Thanks for the input everyone, and please, if you bought a nice box, give the 64-bit vegas a try!
