  • Vegas 9.0 hangs when booting – VST section

I’m running XP SP3 (32 bit). I installed Vegas 9.0e. When I try to start it up, it gets to the VST section and hangs.

I have hundreds of DirectX and VST plug ins since this is the computer I use for multi-track audio as well. I run Nuendo (steinberg) without trouble.

Now, here is the interesting thing… IF I rename the default VST folder (where all the VST plug ins are located), Vegas 9.0 WILL BOOT.

When I checked the “vst_grovel.log” (to check history), it seems to suggest that EVERY VST is LOADED into memory! If this is the case, no wonder Vegas fails when trying to boot with hundreds of VSTs on a 32 bit XP system. IS THIS THE CASE? Does Vegas try to load EVERY VST?

Here is an except from the log…

    INFO 2010-05-21 22:33:22 Loading C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\Absynth4 Stereo.dll.
INFO 2010-05-21 22:33:23 Adding synth ‘Absynth 4’ to cache.
    INFO 2010-05-21 22:33:23 Loading C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\Absynth4 Surround.dll.
INFO 2010-05-21 22:33:24 Adding effect ‘Absynth 4’ to cache.
    INFO 2010-05-21 22:33:24 Loading C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\Absynth4.dll.
INFO 2010-05-21 22:33:24 Adding synth ‘Absynth 4’ to cache.

I know others have experienced Vegas not booting. Does anyone have any insight into this? If I rename the VST folder, then Vegas doesn’t find it and will boot up. It would be odd that any program would goe through the entire folder to load every plug in when it boots up. Plug ins should only be loaded when being used. Is Vegas trying to load up every VST on boot up or when it first initializes?

Is there a way around this other than renaming the VST folder?

I don’t have an answer for you on this, but I would recommend you go here: https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/support/technicalsupport.asp and ask the makers as to whether or not the VST plugs are loaded upon startup and if there is a work around.

One thing you can try is to take half of the VST plugs out of the folder and try loading Vegas. If it still fails, take out another half and so on and so on until it loads. If it loads, add back the first half you removed and try again. If it loads add back the second half you removed and so on and so on until you either reach the limit or you find the troublesome plugin.

I believe Jeremy is on the right path here. Vegas only opens them the first time it encounters them so see if they are VST or VSTi and whether it should present them to you as audio FX or not. I would move them to a new folder and slowly move them back and open Vegas with each new batch. This way it will process less of them at once since it will ignore the ones it already processed.
