  • Vegas 9 project files 64 bit and 32 bit

Posted by Mary Waitrovich on November 11, 2009 at 8:12 pm

I just bought a recent model PC with 4 hard drives and I want to have Windows 7 64 bit on one drive and Windows 7 32 bit on another. I know how to do this and how to switch between the two OSes. My question is – if I am working on a Vegas 9 project file in 64 bit then decide I need to use a plug in that only works in 32 bit, can I open the Vegas 9 project in 32 bit and 64 bit Windows interchangeably?

    thanks,

You can open a project in both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of Vegas Pro interchangeably. The only problem is if you apply a plug-in while in the 32-bit version, you will not get that plug-in in the 64-bit version. (I assume you’ll get a plug-in not found error when you open the project).

Why do you want to dual boot between the 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows 7? There is no reason to ever run the 32-bit version of Windows 7 unless your CPU is not 64-bit capable (like the Intel Atom based NetBooks). Your 32-bit applications will run perfectly fine in the 64-bit version of Windows 7. I’ve been doing this with Vista 64 without any problems.

    John,
I appreciate your answer and your question. I didn’t think 32 bit Vegas would run in 64 bit Windows, but you are saying it will. That’s great and so I will install both on the 64 bit OS. I have some plugins from NEAT video, that don’t support 64 bit. I installed 64 bit Vegas and tried to install the Neat plugins, but they simply don’t show up in the filters list. Do you believe they will show up in 32 bit Vegas even if it’s installed in 64 bit Windows?

Another reason I was thinking of installing 32 bit Windows 7 is because I also play video games and some of my favorite games don’t work at all in 64 bit, especially games downloaded from Steam.

    thanks,
    Mary

Yup the 64-bit version of Vista or Windows 7 runs all of your 32-bit applications just fine. If you have 64-bit CPU there is no reason to use the 32-bit version.

Absolutely. I use Neat Video on Vista 64 with 32-bit Vegas Pro 9.0 all the time.

Not sure where you heard that but I play Half-Life 2 on Vista 64-bit all the time and that’s Steam powered. Like I said, there is absolutely no reason to run a 32-bit OS if you have a 64-bit processor.
