Hi Im new to this forum and would like to ask a question about a problem Im having with Vegas 9- Ive got to warn you that Im no computer expert, so try to bear with me. I have been using Vegas 6 for about 4 years now to edit music videos. I shoot in 720p which I capture using Avid liquid pro before I convert the m2v file to avi that I import into Vegas. I cut the rushes up into individual takes that I then sync up to the audio which involves running around 10-15 multi- tracks of video simultaneously. My editing computer is knocking on for 4 years old but was a respectable bit of kit in its day and even though it only has a single core CPU, it handles this kind of work fine, even when I add grading and effects. I recently downloaded a free trial of Vegas 9 and installed it on this computer. if I tried to run more than 2 tracks of video on Vegas 9 it would “chug” very badly, making it impossible to use for more intensive multi-track projects, so back to the old Vegas 6 I went. Someone recently told me my probs with Vegas 9 was because it was designed to run on more powerful computers such as quads.
As Ive said,Im no computer whizz but that seemed to make sense to me, so as I was over due a new machine, I bought a super dooper new quad core, rammed up editing computer, downloaded another Vegas 9 trial and the dam thing still chugs on the new machine!
A computer whizz friend of mine has checked all the settings on the new comp and says there fine – it should run like lightening – but doesn’t. Any ideas???
    Cheers,
    Dan

Vegas Pro 9 introduced a new “feature” that a lot of us don’t care for and have disabled it.
Here’s what the Readme file says about it:

Right-click the Video Preview window and select Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback if you want to emphasize frame rate during preview.
When the command is not selected, video quality is emphasized, and the frame rate will be reduced if necessary.

Once you disable it, set the Preview window to your usual settings and I’m sure you’ll be happier.

    Thanks for your reply,
I followed your advice but no improvement. Im not sure if I made clear exactly what my prob is. When running a single track of vid things are fine, nice and smooth – its when I run many tracks (3 or 4 plus) that the chugging becomes a problem, especially if the tracks have effects on. Ive just bought a Sony EX3 and the files from this cause the same prob. My Vegas 9 trial is almost up and Im not going to shell out until I can get this program to work- but that means Ive got nothing that can read the files from my EX3 On my old computer running Vegas 6 I can easily run 10 + tracks of video (AVI)
Is there any kind of Sony support line I can call???

That sounds very logic to me. The more Vegas has to calculate before previewing, the more difficult preview will be. But at which point Vegas get preview problems is completely dependent on the specs of your computer.
But there is a solution to have a perfect preview under all circumstances: RAM preview or Render to new track (Ctrl M). I prefer the last one …
