I recently made the connection to slowed frame rate in the Video Preview window and the usage of the SAFE AREA overlay. I thought it couldn’t be that but sure enough I turn it off and the video plays much smoother. Has anyone experienced this? I’m not sure if I had this problem in the prior versions.
I’ve got a feeling my Nvidia Ge6600 card is at fault but it passed all the tests.

On another note whenever I mask an image it takes a huge toll on my CPU in both rendering and in preview. My machine is running XP Pro, 2gigs ram, 4 hard drives, Vegas Pro 8.0c and 256 on the card. Changing the settings to draft or resizing does not help. Any thoughts on this one?
    Thanks
    Joe

You didn’t tell us what CPU your computer has or how fast it runs. Also are you working in SD or HD? It makes sense that using the safe overlay may slow down preview. It’s more things to render. It sounds like your CPU may be minimal for the work you are doing. Vegas does not use your graphics card so it falls all on your CPU.

Thanks for the reply. I am running a dual core 3.2 XP PRO system with 2 gigs of ram. I also use four hard drives whereas the program runs on one, and the rest are used for renders and source media. I don’t recall the prior versions having this problem. It appears to be more of a memory allocation problem from what I see it the PF usage. On note this happens on two different systems but similar configs.

I agree with you. It’s not your CPU. With SD content you should not have any preview problems unless you are using a plug-in that is really dragging you down. Plug-ins like Magic Bullet and Neat Video will slow things down considerable.

How slow framerate in the preview are you talking about. Even with SD and a few tracks with a few effects, it will drop your framerate in the preview. If your expecting 30 fps, you will need to render out the critical parts to see that. There seems to be a limit on the preview speed even with super fast quad cores but the render speeds really improve with thoses fast machines. But in comparison with other NLE’s like Avid, non hardware based, Vegas does well. Untill just recently alot of other NLE’s with any effects needed to be rendered to see at all. Vegas has leaded in this previewing with effects and transitions for along time. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

Thanks for the replies. Let me clarify a little bit more what I have found in my research in direct contact with Vegas in the last year regarding memory allocation. They are aware that a major problem with the software is the HIGH PF usage and memory allocation faults. Where as the program attempts to write to a protected area and windows will crash the program. From what I have read Vegas has a limit on ram usage to only recognize 2 gigs and it also does not utilize more than a dual core. I can’t point to where I read this info but it was not from Sony. My inquiries over the last year put me in contact with a developer and it was this person who recognized the memory limitations.

That being said the masking issue happens without any effects added the moment the masking is completed. I’m talking about just one track and one media clip. I will have to frame by frame advance for it to show properly. This is a huge obstacle as you can imagine. I really don’t recall this being a problem in the prior versions. Vegas 5 never crashed but 8.0a did with regularity. The latest update hasn’t so perhaps some of the issues have been resolved. The preview window will show the … as it is trying to pre render the clip and with the task manager open the CPU usage spikes to almost 100. There are no other programs running, no virus, or spyware or internet connection open at the time. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance
