vegas 8.0 pro program focus delays and importing mpeg2 footage
Hey,
I’ve got a problem that exists across two entirely seperate computers, so it’s not my hardware. I’m trying to import several kinds of video from a few different sources. One is SD mpeg2 video, and one is hd mpeg4 video, both shot on hard disk recording camcorders and copied straight off the hard disk. I’ve also tried converting the mpeg2 to normal .dv files in a third party program (on a macintosh, so they are quicktime .dv files rather than .avi files)
Anyway, each format behaves slighty differently, but all of them generally import fine. the mpegs take forever to build peaks on, but once they’re all loaded, I can put them on the timeline, edit them up, and play them back at reasonable speeds.
The problem is if I ever leave vegas. If I minimize it or switch to a browser window or even an explorer window (including the import dialogue within vegas) then when I go to switch back to vegas, it is extremely slow to respond. The windows go blank and sometimes windows even says it’s not responding, but generally if you wait long enough eventually it starts working perfectly again. The amount of time it takes varies depending on the type of footage (.dv is the fastest, .mpeg2/4 is painfully slow) but it is almost always proportional to how much footage is in the project. For example, a project with one 5 second video clip will be able to switch to and from almost instantly, while a project with an hour of footage can take minutes. Occasionally vegas will crash all together (or maybe I’m just not patient enough to wait on it.)
It seems like the footage is having to be read off the hard drive or loaded into RAM or something when the window gains focus, which makes sense, except during the wait, there is very little (if any) hard disk or cpu activity.
It’s a wildly inconvenient problem as I’m constantly switching from vegas to browsers and explorer windows and that kind of thing as part of my workflow. Vegas works fine with traditional .avi dv files. And no, renaming the file extensions doesn’t work.
Any ideas on what could be causing this problem? It’s highly reproducable, and I was surprised that I was unable to find anyone else complaining about it in a number of forums.

Go to Options – Preferences and turn off “Close media files when not the active application”
This will prevent the files from being released and having to be re attached when focus is regained. However, you won’t be able to do anything with them in other apps either.
BTW, it’s not a problem – it’s a FEATURE.

Well now I feel dumb typing up an entire essay describing my problem and it being that simple of a fix. Thanks!
It still takes unreasonably long to import mpeg2’s initially… any thoughts on that?
