    Hello,
I just got a new camera that produces .MTS files for video. When I import them into Vegas Pro 8, the preview window can’t “keep up” with the video. It’s choppy and impossible to edit this way because I can’t get to a precise spot in the video. I was able to resolve it by rendering the entire source file to AVI (or MPEG) first, then importing the resulting file into Vegas for editing. It seemed to work OK, but this is not ideal for obvious reasons.

Question – is the problem most likely due to the software (Vegas) or my computer just needs a faster processor? The MTS files play just fine on VLC video player; it seems the problem is only with Vegas.

I could just record in AVI mode, which is what I’ll do for now. But if there is a resolution short of getting a new computer, I’d love to know what it is.

    Thanks!

Well… MTS files are AVCHD which requires a lot of processing power. Vegas Pro 9.0 handles AVCHD better than version 8.0 so one possible option is to download the trial of Vegas Pro 9.0 and if it performs better on your computer.

You could also edit with proxies using a tool like VASST GearShift or converting the AVCHD to HDV with a tool like AVCHD UpShift or use Cineform Neo Scene to convert your AVCHD to CineForm format. All of these tools have free trials so I would download them and try them out and select the one that best fits your workflow and the format that runs the best on your PC.

Otherwise you can buy a more powerful PC. 😉
