    Win XP 32

I am currently using a 1TB USB 2.0 external HD for media storage for a project I’m editing. Performance during actual editing is fine. Real time previews at 30 fps playback. Smooth transitions without jerky video issues.

The problem occurs when I open any other window while Vegas 8 is running. MS word, PhotoShop, browser, even taskmanager. When I return to Vegas 8, It freezes while the USB 2.0 hard drive HD “reacquires” the data. This takes about 10 to 15 seconds and then everything returns to normal.

Is my Hard Drive going to sleep? Anyone have a similar issue and a good work around?

    thanks

OPTIONS / PREFERENCES / CLOSE MEDIA FILES WHEN NOT THE ACTIVE APPLICATION.

    turn that off.

Also IMHO USB-2 is not the best for video work. My external HD’s on my editing computer are FireWire, and on the laptop eSATA both of which are much faster than USB.

Does your external HD have a FW connection option? I’ve never encountered the problem you mentioned with FW – eSATA

I use the USB connection on my internet computer for my externals but I don’t do any video work on that machine.

That nailed it. Night and day difference. I wasn’t aware of the “Close media files when not the active application” option. Best advice ever. Can’t thank you enough.

Thanks for the reply. My external drive doesn’t have firewire. But like I said, the media works quite well when I’m editing. The bit rate of the drive seems to be fine. It was the transition from one application to another that caused Vegas to freeze for 10 to 15 sec.

Problem solved by “Close media files when not the active application” option in preferences.

Still, I’ll look for firewire on future external drive purchases.

New issue regarding media. On occasion my media will be marked as offline. The clips listed in project media window will be grayed out. I can capture new media to the very same drive that Vegas 8 thinks is offline, and the new media can be placed on timeline and played. The new caps appear in the project media window not grayed out right alongside the grayed out clips.

Thanks for your help with the previous issue. This issue is different in that there is no freezing of the Vegas program, just the “media offline” issue.
