    Hello,

    Need workflow help please.

    running Vegas 8.0c Build (260)
    win xp pro
    2gig processor, 1gig ram
    quicktime 7.6.6 (1671)

Canon 5d mk 11 clips converted using cinform neoscene do not show any video in the timeline. (In any case the files are too large to edit anyway)

Trial version of Vegas 9 loads converted video but as the system is old way too choppy to edit.

-What conversion software should I use? Neoscene it way to large, Epic? avs?
-what format should I convert to in order to edit freely with my system and render to a final output posting on youtube hd.

Have lots of clips and this is for my new DP Reel, so want the best picture with reasonable playback on youtube.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Your PC is woefully inadequate for working with HD. At minimum you should have a Dual Core 2.8Ghz with at least 2GB of RAM.

You could try VASST GearShift. It will convert your footage to DV Widescreen proxies and allow you to edit with proxies and then swap them out for the HD source when you are ready to render. The trial is good for 15 days so see if you like it before you buy it.

(Disclaimer: I work at VASST and yes, this i my product.) 😉

    Thanks,

I have been through so many conversion programs, It’s amazing.

some do not have the right frame size, some are way too slow,

found that I have to convert to a small wmv file to get smooth playback in auto preview mode or draft, but have to reduce the frame size to 960×540

I have never conformed back to an orignial file.
what are the settings and steps?

and what are the render settings for youtube hd?
so most people can play the file…

    thanks for your help

Bought Gearshift. works fantastic in the vegas 9 trial, but no video displays in vegas 8,

when I convert the canon 5d files to windows media they will show up in the timeline and play in Vegas 8.

as clips play in vegas 9 with the same old computer, its not a hardware issue

should I remove and re-install sony 8, or remove quicktime 7 and replace it with an older virsion? I belive I read one of your posts where you said the new quicktime did not work in vegas 8, but what old version should I download?

You need to backlevel Quicktime to version 7.6.4 or earlier for MOV files to work in Vegas Pro 8.0.

You can find earlier versions of Quicktime on the AVID site.

    Update,

    This is interesting:

the test clip I converted using gearshift in the trial version of vegas 9

Loads and plays great in vegas 8, shifts back to hd uncompresed and plays.

don’t know what is going on here,

Times are too hard to buy all new software and computers

GearShift will do this for you. Otherwise it’s very tedious to replace the files on-by-one in the project media pool.

and what are the render settings for youtube hd? so most people can play the file…

If you have Vegas Pro 9.0 there are YouTube settings under the Sony AVC encoder. They all start with “Internet xxx”. If you don’t have Vegas Pro 9.0, use the Sony AVC encoder at 1280×720-30p.

    John,

I removed quiktime 7.6.6 and downloaded and installed Quicktime version 7.6.4.

Now clips load and convert using Gearshift and play exactly the same as in the trial version of Vegas 9 on my computer.

What threw me, was before I posted this thread, I removed quicktime and installed quicktime version 6.?.? (don’t remember the exact version) with no luck

so quicktime version 7.6.4 restored Vegas 8 to work with canon 5d mk 11 files and Gearshift

You saved my butt on this, amazing!

so impressed how Gearshift conforms back to the orignial hd files with just a click, no time to do it, works instantly

    wonderful

    thanks so much!

Made this little video using the gearshift workflow in sony vegas 8

proxy dv widescreen for editing, then shift back to the camera orignial and render. worked perfectly and smoothly. this is a dvd quality render so most people can play it canon 5d mk11 camera
