    Does DV work in Vegas?

    No…drops frames like crazy.

OK – all those tape-like drops-outs are actually dropped frames in the GOP. What you have to figure out, is where is the bottle-neck in the way of your hard-drive?

One typical thing is the free version of Diskeeper. Disable it during capture.

I’ve always had trouble with Nero running in the background – so disable that.

This ain’t a Vegas problem, per se.

Windows Movie Maker and Vegas uses the same drivers for capture, so there is something very strange going on. Are you sure that all programs are shut down before you run your capture? As RMP asks, do you have Diskeeper, Nero or Norton Anti Virus running?

Start capture of DV, and make sure your camcorder is connected. At the botttom of the new dialog popping up, there is a status bar, it should say something like:

Microsoft DV Camera and VCR : Source 720×480 : Display xxx:yyy : Available Time xx:yy:xxx;nn

    What does your say?

The only time I have seen behavior like this is when I tried to capture using Vegas through USB. The Panasonic camcorders support full quality DV capture through USB, but Vegas and most other NLEs don’t support this kind of capture, only Windows Movie Maker does.

Well, I really wish I knew what else to do…I have diabled or uninstalled everything that could be running in the background. The only thing that I can think of is that its my processor.

The HDV problems are quite possibly caused by your CPU, but the fact that it doesn’t capture properly in DV mode is puzzling, particularly since Microsoft Movie Maker captures fine. Remember, MMM and Vegas uses exactly the same driver to capture DV. There shouldn’t be a difference. The only time I’ve seen a difference is when people use USB rather than Fire Wire to capture since only MMM supports this.

Did your status bar read the same as what I said? What Fire Wire card did you install? Do you have the latest Fire Wire drivers for that card?

The card did not come with any drivers. I’ll have to double check on the make but it is a 6 pin…which is what the Sony support guy said to get. It cost me $27 for the card.

[Terje A. Bergesen] “No, that’s definitely not it. If he is capturing through FireWire, there is no possible way he can get a loop effect.”

You sure can have a feedback loop in your audio at capture from your camcorder using your firewire port. I have had it happen. So don’t tell me it can’t. Have you explored every combination of soundcards and their routings. I think not.
If his audio is echo-ee it very well could be looping in his sound card. I do stand corrected on the Line-Input language however. I use a E-MU Audio Card and you can have a loop when capturing from firewire. So never say never.

    Regards, Rick.

Here is some info I dug up.
    Perhaps it might help.

Tip 1: Go into your system settings and look under System/Hardware/Device Manager, expand Network Devices and
disable your 1394 firewire card. This disables it only as a
network card which can somtimes conflict while capturing thru
    your firewire card.

    Tip2:

There are a variety of problems with the 1394 driver in Windows XP. These are described in this Microsoft Knowledgebase article:
    https://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329256
While the problems described in this article primarily relate to connecting and disconnecting 1394 devices, many users have reported capture problems have been solved after installing the patch recommended in the article. Since this patch is made by Microsoft, and since it can be uninstalled if you don

There is very little processing going on in capturing. It’s the pipeline to your hard-drive (or the hard-drive itself) that seems to be the problem. The continuous stream of data is being interrupted somewhere.
