Vegas 6.0 .avi file support
I am very new to using Vegas
I have .avi type files that I am hoping are supported by Sony Vegas
When I open an avi file in Vegas, Vegas allows me to do so, but does not allow me to “play”, review, snapshot, preview, edit or anything…………………
In other words, the slides that I expect to see at the top of the screen are not there.
Am I doing something wrong?

What type of avi are you trying

AVI is a windows file extension – not a video “type”. Instead, you need to find out what KIND of file it is. AVI can be uncompressed, DV, or more esoteric formats such as DivX or Xvid. Vegas does not include a codec for EVERY type of file that can be in an AVI wrapper. Use a program like GSpot to tell you what kind of file it really is.

Here is what I found out with GSpot on the avi not coming up in Vegas
Video
Codec: MJPG
Name: Motion JGEG
Stat: Codec(s) installedAudio
Codec: PCM Audio
Stat: No codec requiredNeeless to say, the avi type files that I can successfully bring up in Vegas are different in GSpot when compared to what I illustrate above. So is there a way to successfully bring up these particular types of avi files in Vegas? If so, then how?

Do a search here for “MJPEG” and you’ll find links to several MJPEG codecs that work in Vegas. Here’s a post talking about this exact situation.
Also Vegas Pro 8 now includes the MJPEG codec built-in. Not sure about VMS 8.
