Vegas 6 does not recognize camera for capture, yet Nero & Win Moviemaker work

I just hope that you put your firewire plug into the PC the right way round. Despite its shape it does go in both ways. I did this and as a result I blew the i-link on my camcorder which is now in for repair! Hope this is not your problem.

Sounds like you’re using the INTERNAL capture app and should be using the EXTERNAL capture app.

Internal = HDV
External = DV

When you choose capture, it should ask internal or external. If it does not, you selected that option as your default and will need to go into Options – Preferences and change it.

Thanks for this info! Could you please clarify: do you mean Options-Preferences-Video from the main toolbar? If I check the “Use external video capture application”, C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas 6.0\vidcap60.exe is highlighted in the box below. Problem is: when I then go File-Capture video………….nothing happens at all. No Capture dialog box opens, nothing.

If I uncheck this box, the Capture dialog box opens, but then I get the big blue “Device not available” box where I assume it would otherwise say Panasonic DV camera (my camera).

I went & found the Video Capture Release notes in the Vegas program files, & they advise to check the “Enable DV device control” in the Preferences dialog. AGAIN: WHERE IS THIS??? This does not appear ANYWHERE in Options-Preferences in the main program, & also not in the preferences contained in the Capture dialog box.

Where else can I find some Preferences to change? I assume the INTERNAL/EXTERNAL capture advice you have given is somewhere different to these 2 locations I have described. I am using Vegas 6 build 84.

The “Use External” option SHOULD be checked. When choosing File – Capture, a separate program should open up to do the capturing. The other box you mention tells what program will be opened.

What version of Vegas 6 are you using? I recall some older versions where the VidCap program did not load correctly. Update to Vegas 6.0d (the most current version) and then see if all works fine.

I think you have the answer! I also found some stuff on another forum about Vidcap 60.exe not opening on the early build 84 of Vegas. This may also explain why I don’t have some of the options in Preferences (e.g. “Enable DV device control”), which should be where you all say it is. Maybe that option was added after my build of the program.

So can I just download this 3.5MB Vidcap 60.exe (d) from somewhere, or do I have to download the whole 250MB Vegas program to use it? I’m not in a position to buy another Vegas program & am not on broadband/cable to be able to download hundreds of megabites.

You need to download the 130 Meg Vegas 6.0d update. I understand not having broadband. I’m able to download the updates on the DSL at work. If you don’t have that option, do you have any friends with DSL? If yes, download it there, burn it to a CD, and then install it on your home machine.
