  • Vegas 6 Crashes while doing HDV capture from FX1 – any ideas?

Posted by Soonerfan on January 15, 2006 at 12:17 am

Hi – Sorry for the basic question…

I just got an FX1 and Vegas 6c. When I launch Vegas I tell it that I want to use software capture (not DeckLink) and I point it to the FX1 camera as the source.

But when I push the red button in the Vegas capture window to start capturing (the camcorder is hooked up and recognized via firewire), Vegas hangs. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Also, it seems that, even though Vegas will recognize the camcorder it will not show the video playing in the lower left window (even though it plays on the FX1 monitor.)

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

First, you need to make sure you are using the “Internal capture” for capturing hdv. The external capture program is for dv footage.

Uncheck the option for “Use external video capture application” in the Options|Preferences|Video tab.

You must also ensure that Windows sees the FX1 correctly

    Cheers

This is pretty important if it’s the first time you’ve connected your FX1 to the PC, because windows XP will typically choose the wrong driver by default. If you’re familiar with the process for manually choosing a driver, the one you want is Sony DVHS.

If you’re not familiar with it, do a search on this forum, perhaps on DVHS, there is a step-by-step process. Oh, here’s one.

And do use the internal capture app, like Jeremy mentioned. If you’re not presented with a dialog to choose which app, go into Vegas prefs, you’ll find it.

i just can’t find any driver (Sony D-VHS Device) on my system at all, neither on the net so far
searched all over the deice manager, installing new hardware, etc
xp sp2 installed and again …
where do you guys get this stuff
so my pc doesn’t recognize the camera (fx1)
funny enough, on an old mac powerbook 12 inch with cut pro eveything worked like a charm
as well as in I movie
    who’s got the solution ???

um… that’s whats worked for me and everyone I’ve heard of. It’s very important that you follow the steps in the post referenced above very carefully. Yes, this should work fine on your system with XP SP2.

Does it connect up for standard mini-DV? You should check this first, to make sure that you actually have good firewire connectivity, that is, that your camera fw port is working, you have a good cable, and your pc fw card/port is working.

Here are some expanded driver instructions.

    1. Plug in camera, then turn it on.
    2. Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
    3. Locate AVC/Subunit in the Device Manager
    4. Right click, choose Properties
    5. Choose Update Driver, and DO NOT let Windows go searching on Windows Update. Choose “not this time”
    6. Next, choose “install from a list or specific location.
    7. Next, choose “don’t search, I will choose the driver to install”.
    8. Next, uncheck “show compatible hardware”

NOW, you should be seeing the pick list.

    9. Browse to Sound, Video, Game Controllers to find the driver
    10. Locate Sony in the list of Sound, Video, Game Controllers
    11. Open the first Sony in the list, and select the DVHS driver as the driver for your camera. (there will probably be 3 sony entries, look for the DVHS driver)
    12. next, finish, etc. Then give it a try with the Vegas 6.0c internal capture utility.

If this doesn’t work and you’ve confirmed that your camera FW, FW cable and PC FW all work, you’re probably on to reinstall of Vegas and possibly Sony tech support.

    thanks for replying
but i’m getting a little desperate
    your description really sounds ok
and that’s exactly what i’ ve been doing all the time
only … no sony controller (or whatever this is called) to be found
so that’s what i’m looking for
i understood that my pc just doesn’t recognize the camera because the controller (?) or driver (?)
    isn’t there on my system
so i still wonder how you guys got it ?
    thanks a lot anyway
    cheers

Sorry this isn’t working for you – it’s worked on 2 of my computers (one XP Pro, one XP Home), and worked for forum members.

Every time I look at the list of steps I realize there’s another tiny little thing to add, such as:

    1. Plug in the camera and turn it on.
This means plug in the firewire, then turn on camera power, then wait for XP to recognize it

    3. Locate AVC/Subunit in the Device Manager
This will be under the “sound, video and game controllers” headging, click the little plus sign to expand the listing, then double-click on the camera’s entry to open up the properties dialog

It would help if you provided more information – at what point in the process does your pc show you something different than the instructions? You are using Vegas 6.0C or Cineform ConnectHD with Vegas 5? You have checked your firewire ports on your camera and PC and checked your cable?

i did exactly all you mentioned
it’s just there is no sony stuff with my ‘videocontrollers’
    in the dvice manager subunit
no idea where to find it elsewhere
    reinstalled xp with sp2
    it’s just not there
so it ‘s not working with vegas 6.0c or adobe premiere pro 2
i’ll have another dvcam and different firewire cables to try tomorrow
    thanks again for your kindness
