So i have vegas 5.0 and i usualy make movies out of other movies. Putting the whole 2 hour long movie in the media bin takes to long, so i bought avi splitter off the internet to cut only the parts i needed… I made a bunch of movies, but then one day my computer got hosed from malware, and i had to wipe my C drive, (all of my avi splits and Vegas Saves were on a different drive) now when i load one of those saves, there is no video! THe sound works fine, and when i play the splits in media player the video works fine, but nothin with vegas. not to mention, i cant get new video splits because my computer thinks i havent payed for avi splitter and keeps telling me my trail is up! what do i do to get my splits working again, and is there anyway to find the old serial i used on avi splitter?

Did these same “split AVIs” work okay in Vegas before your drive got hosed? If yes, my guess is that in your recovery, you didn’t restore the codec needed by those AVIs.

Your “splitter” app probably encoded the pieces using a highly compressed codec like Divx, Xvid, etc — what are called DirectShow codecs. Vegas doesn’t recognize DirectShow codecs natively; it likes VfW (Video for Windows) codecs. What you need is either a VfW-specific version of the codec or something like ffdshow.

As Rob pointed out…seems definitely that the particular codec
these files used was uninstalled during this process…
actually do you only see a black background when
    playing these files in vegas?

I know — and it’s not going to work unless you follow one of my suggestions. 😉 The official Divx codec is not recognized by Vegas natively. That is why you need either a) a VfW version of Divx or b) something like ffdshow that will fake it.

hmm, are those both safe? because i dont even want to risk getting one bit of crap on my new pc, it was such a pain in the ass. If so? where can i get a VfW version?

In the ffdshow program folder, you’ll find a programmed called VFW Configuration. Run that and select the Decoder tab. On the right, find the codec you want Vegas to be able to use. You will probably see “disabled” in the Decoder column for that codec. Selecting the word “disabled” will give you a dropdown box. Click the dropdown’s arrow and choose “libavcodec” and click OK.

Note that there are a few Divx versions listed (in mine, anyhow). You may need to do this for all of them.
