I was given the task to compare Vegas 5 (which is what I currently use) vs. Premiere Pro 1.5 (which is what I’m currently learning).

I’ve notice some serious drawbacks with Premiere Pro that I took for granted in Vegas 5. It could also be due to me not knowing the application very well.

One of the great features which I love in Vegas, which I have not found in Premiere Pro is bezier masks. I can easily mask and animate (using bezier curves) in Vegas 5 without a problem. The only thing I found (and heard of) in Premiere Pro that comes even close to that is the 16 Point Garbage Matte. However, that does not come close to the masking capabilities of Vegas 5. Am I missing something in Premiere Pro (and please don’t tell me to use After Effects, I would like to stick with Premiere Pro for now).

Also, althought the Titler sucks in Vegas 5 compared to that of Premiere Pro, I can animate all of my properties (font size, color changes, etc., etc.)

I do love the trimmer of Premiere Pro over Vegas though. It’s much nicer. I also like that it forces you to create a project, where as in Vegas, you don’t have to at all.

Are there any other pro’s for Premiere vs. Vegas (and vice versa). I’d love to hear from all, but especially, from anyone that has experience with both NLE’s.

By no means and I trying to bash on Premiere, I’m just trying to find out what’s the best one to use for the projects I have to work on. Also, I have to decided if I should stick with Premiere Pro or upgrade to Vegas 6, which has lots of improvements.

    Thanks!

    Hi Marcelo,

Premiere is limited in it’s ability to animate properties. AfterEffects is the compositing companion to Premiere.

I have been using Vegas 4 as my secondary editor for some quick edits. I am not sure if there are major differences between V4 or V5. But, if there are let me know and I will download a trial version to do some detailed comparisions.

Yeah. There are major updates from 4 to 5 and more even from 4 to 6, which is the latest version. I highly recommend you update that with the new version.

    Cheers!

Yeah. THe only problem is you have to render out every time. It would be nice if you could just create the comp in AE and import that comp into PPro without having to render it (kind of like importing a PSD file, then you can go into Photoshop edit it, and just refresh the view in Premiere Pro).

Ok. I will download the trial and post a detailed comparison in a couple of days. I don’t think I will be purchasing Vegas though, since I use Premiere Pro for 99% percent of my projcts.

I would say there are a couple of other serious advantages in favor of PPro:

-Rendering performance: Vegas is just slow to render – even V.6 which is improved. PPro on my dual Opteron is very quick to render.

-Integration: The Adobe suite offers some serious capabilities when you use them together. I find the flow is powerful.

-Stronger 3rd party support: There are just more H/W and S/W options for PPro. Vegas is doing a lot better but still not as widespread as Adobe.

There are more but these are the broader issues.

I like both apps for different reasons, as both have minuses and pluses.

    Vegas:
The ability to work on simple composites inside Vegas is a plus, but its unique interface kills me. Even with the so-called updates in Vegas 6, it still lacks the ability to nest sequences. I know you can import Vegas projects, but that’s not enough these days.
I also like the responsiveness of previews in Vegas.

    Premiere:
Since its UI is more standard, I work faster in Premiere. The integration with other Adobe products is something Sony should try to improve with Vegas, Acid, Sound Forge.
Also when choosing a system, you should also consider 3rd party support – Premiere scores another point here.
