Vegas 5 and volume settings for DVD project.

I’m working on a project for a DVD. 3 to 4 sound tracks. audio from the video, voice over, music.
Since my hearing is not what it used to be and since I have my own computer volume control set for me, I’m trying to judge the volume by DB’s both on the volume envelope and master Bus. Mainly I’m trying not to see the red clipping. Voice over generally -0.3db, Music during VO -31.9db Audio from video varies -12.6 to -4.7 etc.
I ran a draft DVD and on my TV the sound seems kind of soft (quiet).
Am I doing this right or should I go more to a -0.1db? I realize each project and person is different but I’d like some general ideas.

If you render to AC3, the volume will be reduced using the default settings. I have the “fix” fully documented in my FAQ section:

I’ll go look. But since this is a rather short video, 35 minutes, I was thinging of trying PCM audio but I tried that once before in DVDA-2 and couldn’t seem to do it. Only choice I had if I remember correctly was AC-3.So Rendering to AC-3 sets all volume to some default setting no matter what I set in the timeline of Vegas?

If you go to the optimize screen, you should be able to specify you want PCM instead. Then there should be NO changes to your audio.

Not exactly. The net result is that the audio being played is reduced on your DVD unless you change a couple of settings. There’s been a few larger explanations listed.

Thanks. Had a wonderful time at your web site FAQ’s. Not only did I print the one you sent me to but also found about how to do PCM in the optimizing window.Also that you like 2-pass vbr which I’ve been using as well as Best setting for my render because this one has a lot of both video and very large stills with Ken Burns effect.
I’ll have to send you and Gary a copy of this one too.

What settings? I watch the master bus and make sure none of the volume goes into the red. Should never go above ‘0’ from what I understand. I keep most of my settings to -.03. After doing the above tips, it plays fine on my TV.
From what I understand any red is clipping and in digital audio clipping is a no-no.
