  • Vegas 17 confused when printing to tape.

    Greetings.

I use the function of Print to Tape on a daily basis, but Vegas 17 is simply just fickle.

I always use Vegas-made DV file and the bahaviour of Vegas is erratic, one time it prints fine, the other I get an error that over 80% of the sequence needs to be rendered, or it goes to rendering short sequences of avi with continous 4 digit numbers.

And yes, I always check the fullscreen/widescreen and PAL/NTSC settings.

Ad worst of all, sometimes out of the blue the video stops being supplied out and there is only audio and I have to restart the recording process.

Restarting Vegas and rebooting the computer does not appear to be a factor.

    I operate on W10.

What are the specs of your computer? Have you tried uninstalling or reinstalling the app? Because it seems to be some sort of glitch that is preventing you from doing what you usually do because 80% needs to be rendered. If it has worked for you before and then suddenly getting that glitch, perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling Vegas 17 will help eliminate the problem. Even updating Vegas to the latest if you can afford to may be able to eliminate the problem too. I wish you the best of luck with this man!

The specs will have to wait, as the laptop died independently.

The problem occurs at random, sometimes on first try, sometimes after printing successfully to several tapes.

I have already upgraded from 15 to 17.

The new GUI in newer versions is different and the project settings no longer include older resolutions, especially DV.

In other words, since the GUI is different from Sony Vegas 15 to 17, does that mean you have been having this issue after you upgraded? Or you had this issue before you updated to Vegas 17?

Yes, the problem was already there.

    Hey Sebastian,

Although I have never used the Print to Tape feature myself, I would be more than happy to try and help by listing some of the most common causes for these types of issues.

    1. Use Legacy Decoder – In Preferences > Deprecated Features, enable “Use legacy AVC/DV decoder” if available.
    2. Disable Dynamic RAM Preview – Go to Preferences > Video and set Dynamic RAM Preview Max (MB) to 0.
    3. Pre-render the DV file – Read about this after a quick search. Instead of letting Vegas render during the print process, try rendering the project fully to a DV-AVI file first and then print that to tape.

Let me know if any of these help or if the issue still persists!

I may have a theory about what variable might trigger the error, but it’s really weird.

I will check the first 2.

But I always use a prerendered master file.

Got it! Let me know what you find after testing.

No theory is too weird when it comes to troubleshooting Vegas! Nothing makes sense, and the answer is always where you least expect it – that’s Vegas in a nutshell. So please feel free to share your theory! Maybe I or someone else can help figure it out.

Well, I think it’s just Vegas being a drama queen, when I switch to another window while Vegas goes hrough preparation process, there is error, when I stay in Vegas all the way to the end pr preparation it goes into printing. So could be something with that RAM preview.

Classic Vegas being difficult! A similar issue occurs for me when making a nested timeline. As soon as I tab out and back in, Vegas instantly crashes.

If changing the Dynamic RAM Preview to 0 doesn’t work, you could try to set vegas to High Perfomance mode.. If Windows is set to optimize performance based on active applications, background tasks may be deprioritized and cause issues while preparing. Go to Control Panel > Power Options and set it to High Performance. Also check Vegas.exe in Task Manager and set its priority to High.

If this doesn’t work, I would recommend to revert these changes. Not sure if they have any negative impact on Vegas that I haven’t discovered yet.

Let me know if this works for you!

“Use legacy AVC/DV decoder” is not available.

I’ve set the RAM to 0 and will now do another run at printing.
