Is my computer just getting old? I’ve had it since 2010 or 2011, and now Vegas 11 is having all kinds of problems. When I try to render video, it takes something like 10 or 15 seconds to get to the Render As window. Often times the render just hangs when I try to begin, there will be no audio on audio renders, it will hang at 22%, it will say it’s 100% rendered but the status bar isn’t full, and it runs forever, etc.

Now I’m editing three camera multicam footage shot on a 5D and two t3is, and it’s chugging along at 2 or 3 fps, for the most part. Once in a while it plays back smoothly. The quality is set at Preview Auto.

I have a 3.2 Ghz Intel i7 CPU, 12 GB DDR3 RAM, an nvidia GTS 450 graphics card (it’s on the lower end of cards Vegas can use for GPU acceleration), and am editing to a 1 TB platter hard drive that has 500 GB or so of free space, connected via an esata cable.

I guess it could be a number of things, and I want to get a new computer soon, anyways. Startup has also been slow part of the time. But I’ve already tried doing things to speed up my computer. It doesn’t need defragging, the internal hard drives have plenty of space, and the only other thing I run on this computer are Firefox and DVD Architect.

Yeah, could be a number of things. Could also be your system memory
card/s are getting old (going bad).

No reason to get a new computer since you already have an excellent CPU. Have you checked to see if you have lots of crap running on system startup? This is always the first place to check when the system starts running slow.

If you have Windows 7, click the Windows ‘ball’ at lower left and in the search box type MSCONFIG. When the configuration window opens, click the Startup tab. Uncheck EVERYTHING except your antivirus software, then click ‘Apply’. Reboot your computer.

Upon reboot you’ll get a popup about running in a special configuration setting, so click ‘do not show this message again’.

Now see if this improved things.

This thread I made a while ago has a pic of the programs I have running on start up.

I never ended up taking your advice to uncheck everything except antivirus because I’ve never heard anyone recommend that before and couldn’t find anything that corroborated it. I’d like to try it but wonder if there’s anything that could go wrong.
