Vegas 11 Can’t Render MP4s????
Posted by Ken Bennett on May 14, 2012 at 4:53 pmSo, can somebody explain why Vegas 11 can’t render MP4 file? Every time I try it crashes. Vegas 11 still not ready for PrimeTime?
Works just fine in Vegas 10e

May 14, 2012 at 6:20 pmI have always been able to create .mp4 files in vegas 11. I have not run into that problem.

May 14, 2012 at 8:20 pmThere does seem to be a limit of how high a bitrate you can use. For instance, I can’t go above 8mbps when rendering 1280×720 24p in Sony AVC.

May 14, 2012 at 10:47 pmIf there was no limit in V10e, why would Sony impose one in V11? Makes no sense. To even get MP4 I have to go into the options and in the Systems tab change from M2TS to MP4.
This seems to be a game NLE software manufacture seem to to play with updates. I’ve seem it happen in Premiere as well.

Ahh… what you might be experiencing is the change in Vegas Pro 11.0 from Sony AVC to MainConcept AVC as the primary MP4 render codec. All of the MP4 “Internet” templates have been moved to the MainConcept AVC encoder which is now GPU accelerated. This is what you should be using for MP4 files. The Sony AVC engine is just primarily for Blu-ray now (although you could make your own MP4 templates but it’s better to use MainConcept).
This is confusing and I’m not sure Sony documented it but you’re gonna love the GPU speed boost with MainConcept AVC if you have a beefy graphics card.

I’m having the same feelings. What use to be 2 clicks is now several clicks and while I understand what they were trying to do, it’s just a lot harder to use. I believe what you have to do is mark all of your most used templates as Favorites and then tell it to only show favorites and then it gets easier because you only see your most used templates (which for most people is just a few).

On one of my workstations I have never been able to encode MainConcept AVC. On a suggestion from Sony Support (yes, they do respond) I have no issues encoding MainConcept AVC when selecting CPU Only in the “render as” options.
(You don’t “render” MP4 notwithstanding that Sony put the encoding options into the “Render As” menu)

Problem solved. Thanks all. Thanks Stephen for a detailed diagram.
But I still need to borrow John’s brain.
