Vegas 10.x 1st impressions
Long time Vegas User since 3.0. Starting at 4.0 I upgraded even revisions only, hence I’m going from 8.x to 10.x.
I was REALLY hoping Pan/Zoom would incorporate the Z-axis to manipulate 2D objects in space. I did the egg-timer test, aka 3-minutes to figure it out, using the new stereoscopic FX with no luck… I digress…
Rendering: Rendering issues with HD 1080p using AVCHD source files in 8.x was the reason I positively had to upgrade
It rendered my multi-track 1920x1080p AVCHD 2:30 project chapter in it’s entirety to YUV AVI. In 8.x I had to break all my chapter projects into 30/60-second pieces and render in multiple steps otherwise it would crash. There is no longer an HDV intermediate template using the Cineform Codec. I used this template in 8.x because it worked, to reduce my disc space by 5X, and to get better playback in my Final Render project. Anyone have suggestions for a compressed AVI codec and template for 10.x?
Rendering highly compressed (mts) to highly compressed (wmv)still hangs. My system goes from high-fan with a lot of disk-activity on my raid 0 SCSI setup to nothing and the project simply hangs. This is the same behavior as 8.x
Playback:Sizeable improvement in AVCHD playback – I can review in real-time on my dual-core 3.2ghz with 2GB of ram in preview auto mode from a G-Drive Mini. 8.x required draft half. The default for the viewer changes the resolution of the preview in playback to eliminate stuttering. It also changes the quality setting when you enlarge the video viewer which I quite often do as I edit on a 61″ Samsung DLP.
Track Grouping:LOVE the new track grouping feature, mostly for the ability to group and hide/collapse (H/C) tracks in a large project. The implementation of the H/C feature is well thought out and allows you to easily see the H/C track grouping with the name visible. You also see outlines of your media in the individual grouped tracks, exellent job here!
IS:The Image Stabilization does a nice job. I compared it to some Image Stabilization footage I fixed with After Affects on my last project. Vegas does all the resizing of video to eliminate blackbars. what I REALLY liked is it appears to drop blurry frames without any visible stuttering. Excellent job on this new feature.
Misc: Like the new volume meter on the Audio tracks. Certainly doesn’t take the place of viewing the audio master and you have to make your track into a vertical skyscraper, but nice.
Did a nice job of porting my plugins.
Vegas just crashed accessing the Protype titler. Backup now. I didn’t have Protype Titler in version 8.x and have hopes this will allow me to spend less time in After Affects achieving similar/same results.
The new White Balance FX is nice.
The more subdued dark tones are much easier on the eyes.
What’s your thought on 10.x?-Just because you can doesn’t mean you should-
