  • Vector Paint crashing – Ram / Cache settings?

Posted by Kevin Dearing on August 27, 2008 at 2:33 pm

    Hi all,
I did some searching but didn’t come up with anything conclusive.. I’ve been trying to do some roto work by using Vector Paint (as in the tutorial here on the COW). Only thing is, AE CS3 crashes every time unless my paint strokes are very short.. I have a feeling it has to do with my RAM / Cache settings but I’m not in front of my computer right now so I don’t know what they are.. I have AE CS3 installed on my less powerful laptop so I’ll try it here later today..

My question is simply, what would be the first thing you experts would look at? RAM settings? If so, can someone point me to a tutorial or a post that I recall seeing recently where someone explained how AE utilizes RAM and the cache?

FYI, my machine is a quad core, with 4 Gigs of ram – but since I’m runnin Vista that doesn’t really matter!

Thanks in advance for any tips..

Well, I’ve tried vector paint on my P4 with 1 GB ram, and a tiny, super slow HD (running XP pro). No problems so I’m convinced that I’ve got my settings on my desktop incorrectly set or, perhaps it’s a vista issue.

My apologies for this post, I’ve just been reading through all of the stuff that was returned when I did a search for RAM / Disk Cache and there’s a lot of good stuff but I recall reading something that one of you guru’s posted not too long ago about how AE uses the Ram settings and the disk cache and it was excellently explained – my memory just isn’t .. what was I saying?

Thanks again for any help in this matter! Once I get to my desktop (I’m out of town now..) I’ll post my settings..

    Hey mate,

Did you ever get this issue sorted on your desktop? The exact same thing happens on my desktop. I’m running Vista 64 with 6 gigs of ram…

    Cheers

Hi Kevin. I was just wondering if you solved the crashing issue with vector paint. I am also running it on Vista 64 bit and find that if you just do short strokes it is fine but anything longer than 4 secs is a 50/50 chance of crashing. I am using CS4 and they still havn’t fixed this bug. I also have tried different RAM/cache settings with no luck. It has also happened right after purging all from memory. I also had the same thing happen on my Mac Book Pro. Let me know if you found a way to avoid this. Thanks, Paul.

the problem is certainly related to windows vista.
It has something to do with Windolws Aero; I’m using windows seven x64 on a quad core desktop with 4GB of ram, having the same problem. however, I changed my windows theme to classic and it seems like the problem is solved. I’ve vector painted 10 frames so far and no problem has yet shown up.

I have been using windows 7 64bit, and was having the same problem.

As well as the symptoms of sluggish interface in particular the project panel, twirling folders or importing footage was taking a long time (sometimes upto a minute to respond to anything). Tried updating QT, running updates on CS4, new network cable all the usual suggestions tried but was just making do with it. Well until vector paint was not even working for me and searched this, I was already running classic mode for my theme (very old school but I love it) so no go there. Someone in the studio suggested compatibility mode. I ran AE CS 4 in win XP SP 3 mode and the above traits have seem to gone now, and I can use vector paint. It is still a little laggy when drawing ( I am only using SD video and small brush) but least the experience using AE is pleasent again.

    Maybe this will help others.

    Feedback if it does 😀
