vector art in 3D looks fuzzy?
Posted by Patrick Collins on June 22, 2007 at 10:10 amHi…
I don’t understand why this is happening:

This just happened to another vector image in my project– It is only scaled down to 98%, and as soon as turning on the 3D switch, it becomes junky anf fuzzy looking……………
If anyone can enlighten me as to why this is happening and how to fix it, then I will be forever in your debt.
Thank you.

June 22, 2007 at 1:28 pmif you have a 3D camera in there, make sure Depth of Field is turned off.

June 22, 2007 at 6:52 pmhi there, thank you for the reply.
this is my project:
https://www.collinatorstudios.com/www/dvdmenu2.zipI am using a camera, but depth of field is off…
It just seems that for example, the logo– if I click the 3d switch on the logo.ai layer, it immediately becomes fuzzy. I don’t understand why this is happening.. Don’t I want all of my elements to be 3D to utilize 3D drop shadows, etc.. ?

June 22, 2007 at 7:28 pmTry turning off openGL in AE.
It’s the button under the comp window that looks like a lightning bolt through a computer screen. Set it to off.
If this fixes the problem, you are having an issue with your video card not being fully compatible with AE.

June 22, 2007 at 7:43 pmwait. Do you have Continuous rasterization turned on (same button as the collapse transformation button). You need that turned on for a vecotr layer for it to keep it’s clarity.
Make sure that option is turned on for that layer (little sun button on the layer)

June 22, 2007 at 8:01 pmWell.. This is whats confusing.. It appears that when 3D is checked on, the continous rasterize no longer does anything—
And more importantly, I have a camera move– and if I take my background precomp layer and click the continuous rasterize (since the background is one of the things that are looking fuzzy), then suddenly my camera positions are no longer happening…
If you have downloaded my project, you can see this by going into my main comp (menu1), to the beginning around 5 seconds into it and go to layer 20 and click continuous rasterize on, you will see that the position suddenly changes and we’re no longer zoomed into the background (I don’t quite understand this behavior).
Thank you again for your help– if I can get this resolved I will be so happy.

June 22, 2007 at 11:21 pmI figured it out.. Though why this is the case is a mystery…
I had a gradient (white solid + ramp – blending options to multiply), my vector art both in a precomp…
and for some reason having this in a precomp caused it to get fuzzy.. If I take the elements out of the precomp then it works fine……………… I DONT GET IT!!!

June 23, 2007 at 6:08 amThree things jump right out at me about your project..
First item. The illustrator artwork was 20 inches by 20 inches. Actually that was the document size. The artwork extended way past the edges. Why so big? You end up with a comp that’s nearly 4000 pixels wide. Lots of unnecessary calculations going on here.
Second item. I noticed that the antialiasing was set to faster instead of more accurate in the interpretation of the footage. I know that there are no gradients in your artwork, but I find that this just works better. If I knew how I”d set the interpretation rules so this was the default.
Third item. It has been my experience that CR works much better when you scale up than when you scale down. I guess this goes along with the first item.

June 23, 2007 at 6:20 amHi, Thanks for the reply…
Well to be honest, I have minimal experience with AE, so I am not quite sure how the best way to do things are.
Can you please tell me where these anti-aliasing settings are found? I am not seeing them..
thank you.
