VC-1 Questions.
I’ve read a fair amount regarding how VC-1 is making great inroads into the post production industry as well as the many articles comparing it to H.264.
What confuses me however is that all the documentation I’ve seen (including SMPTE docs) indicate that VC-1 only supports 4:2:0 sampling. This is obviously not suitable for post work, nor higher-end editing, nor is it comparable to the potential 4:4:4 (10 & 12bit) offered by H.264. (Does VC-1 offer better sampling in the Advanced profiles at one of the higher levels)?
Can somebody correct me on this, or if I am correct, isn’t VC-1 only really suitable as a delivery format?

Yes, both VC-1 and most H.264 implementations today are delivery codecs.
The High 422 Profile of H.264 is appropriate as a competitor to High Profile MPEG-2 applications, but I don’t know of anything shipping that yet.

I’m not quite sure, but it looks like MainConcept’s V2 H.264 encoder supports High but it’s unclear whether it’s 4:2:2.
What I really needed confirmation on was whether VC-1 can/will do any better than 4:2:0?

At this time, VC-1 is only really suitable for delivery and off-line post work where color isn’t a priority. While additional support for 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 are not on the immediate roadmap for VC-1, they are there and I suspect they will be implented eventually.
