VASST Absolute Training and MPEG-2 Settings
In the VASST Absolute Training series, Disk 2, DSE recommends setting MPEG-2 render settings to ‘Good’, unless one has a lot of stills, graphics or generated media.
A: What kinds of things qualify as Generated Media? Do Text Generators qualify? (What other things qualify? Boris RED? After Effects?)
B: Why not set it to “Best”, by default?
Pardon my ignorance. I am learning a lot.

Norman: I always render with BEST quality settings… the criteria on using “good” i think applies up to DV material … fast rendering and very good quality… now with HD sources you can SEE the difference in the final mpeg2 rendering….

One of the differences between “Good” and “Best” is the algorithm used to resize media. What DSE was referring to is if you have a lot of stills that will be resized to match the project, you will get a higher quality resize by using Best. Otherwise Good should be fine for most projects. Using Best adds significantly to the render times which is why you should only use it when needed.
I would try a short render both ways and if you can see a difference, use Best, otherwise use Good. I use Best for all of my photo montage projects but I pretty much use Good for everything else.
