  • Varying render times in FCP 5.1.4

    Hello all;
    I’m FCP beginner here and i’m having a strange issue where i’m rendering some video clips that range from 30-60 seconds and the render times seem to differ wildly from clip to clip. One 35 second clip took about 4 minutes to render(about right) but then i tried to render another and that took 15 minutes. The source for all these clips are QT’s with H.264 compression. Sequence setting is set to DV/NTSC 720 x 480.

    thanks in advance

    Putting clips that are H.264 compression in a DV timeline isn’t a common editing practice. I might suggest using QuickTime Pro or Compressor to convert these clips to DV files, then import them into FCP. I think it would end up being easier to work with that way.

    As far as varying render times, are all of the h.264 files compressed the same? Same frame size, frame rate, quality?

    Hi Russ;
    thanks for the quick feedback. I thought that’s where the bottleneck might be occurring actually. I did try to set H.264 & 720 x480 as the compressor setting in my sequence settings but it gave me an incorrect codec error? As far as i know all the H.264 files are prepared the same. Unfortunately the client gave us the files so i have to assume they were all batch encoded since they gave us 35 clips.

    -thx
