Varicam Virgin
Howdy All,
Yes it’s true, I’ve got a big History Channel gig coming up and I’ll be using the Varicam for the first time. I’ll be getting the Goodman guide and will have the camera to use at home for a while to do my own tests, but thanks to the HD Expo folks and Jeff at Panasonic now I’m onto this great group as my go-to knowledge base!
I won’t be able to go to the Varicamp until June in NY, so I’m on my own for now. Here’s a few questions for my first posting:
First of all, what would be the best/smallest HD reference monitor I should use for doing my tests and fine-tuning looks? If anyone is familiar with the monitor inventory at Abel, that’s where the camera is coming from. And can one truly rely on the auto-setup feature on these digital monitors referencing the camera bars?
Second – and I know this is a stretch, but what the hell – I’d love to know if any of you shooters are in the habit of file-sharing your scene files. I’m aware that the Goodman CD has some diverse setups that I can load in, but I’m eager to see just how broad the range of options are and hopefully score a few choice looks that I can appropriate (well, at least I’m honest). I’m no engineer, and I fear entering the bottomless pit of image control – especially because we may be using six or eight distinct looks within the one program (a bunch of re-enactment stuff, which will be a blast).
Finally, I’d love to get a recommendation for a solid Varicam AC/Engineer in New York – someone who knows all the bells and whistles that I can hire to help me with my tests as well as on the shoots (Feb-March in NY).
