Varicam Upgrade
Posted by Justice Pictures on August 11, 2005 at 4:08 amI am ready to purchase a Varicam and my dealer told me today of the bigger, better verison of the camera coming out (and the rebates). Anyone know exactly what these upgrades are? I have the opportunity to purchase a B-stock for an even better price, but wonder if it is a good idea. Any input?

August 11, 2005 at 5:57 amInfo on the 27H is now available at Panasonic’s website. One Major difference between 27F and 27H is 10 bit versus 12 bit. List pricing is still the same between the two.

this is only an issue for live capture from the camera – the info laid to tape is still only 8bit.
besides other than D5 or SR series decks- name one that can record more than a 8 bit signal to tape.gary adcock

I was not referring to the signal laid down on tape instead I was referring to the digital signal processing in the camera head. No current HD camcorder can record more than 8 bits to the onboard vtr.
FYI In cameras Bits refer to more than just the signal laid down to tape.

August 11, 2005 at 5:17 pmYes, I noticed it was listed as a new item on the Panasonic site, but couldn’t find any “these are the new features and why it’s better” section. So, what advantage does this 12 bit give over the 10 if it can only record 8 to tape? Being that I’m going to save five thousand more (even after the rebates) buying a B-stock 27F I’d like to know if it really matters.

August 11, 2005 at 6:06 pmThe only real big deal is the lower noise of the new ‘H’ model. The Varicam has be discribed as many as being ‘noisy’. I don’t have a problem with it but, some do. There are a couple of good posts below that better discribe the changes
