I’m quite new to the Varicam. I was just on a shoot, mostly at night, using minimal lights. To help with exposure I flipped the shutter switch to off. While this cleary helped me with low light situations, how exactly does it look? Is the result less film-like, more video like? Whar are the pro’s? What are the cons? Should I be aiming to set gain settings higher (I set this at bewteen 6 and 9db) before swithcing the shutter off to get that extra ooomph? Are they going to hate the ‘shutter off’ look in post? Or will the quality still be satisfyingly HD and they won;t notice anyway. I would value your feedback and opinions on this and exatly when ‘shutter off’ is best employed. Thanks, Gil

Many viewers will not notice the difference, but, yes, there is a very observable difference in the look. While it’s less of a factor than interlaced v. progressive, it’s far more to the “video” look than the “film” look. Some will definitely find it objectionable, or at least less enjoyable, and you could find that cutting with 180
