Varicam RF warnings
Posted by Barry Dycus on March 29, 2007 at 12:54 pmI own an F series Varicam an occassionally I get RF warnings while recording. The tape machine continues to record and the tape plays back fine. Has anyone experienced this and do you know exactly what is going on? Thanks in advance for any help.

March 29, 2007 at 2:32 pmI’ve seen this on ocassion as well, and can’t really say what the cause is. At the least I would think it indicates that you’re due for a tape head cleaning or service to replace the cleaning rollers in the recorder.
These types of intermittent, unexplained problems are the worst, and cause you to mistrust your gear which can be nerve wracking so it is in your best interest to track down the problem, if it persists service is definately in order, even though there’s always the chance that the problem will not be recreated in the shop, at least you’ll get a thorough cleaning.

March 30, 2007 at 9:43 amI also just 3 weeks ago had the machine cleaned, new pinch arm and cleaning roller arm assembly replaced. Sure would be nice if someone from Panasonic would shed some light on this issue.

March 30, 2007 at 1:51 pmI’ve had some occasional RF warnings too. Could it be a tape stock issue? I was using Fuji tape. My old BetaCam would give me false RF warnings when using certain brands of tape stock other than Sony.

I have thought that it might be a tape issue however, this happens with both Fuji and Panasonic tape in my Varicam. It is my understanding that both tape stocks are manufactured by Fuji anyway.

March 30, 2007 at 11:45 pmThis is what Ive been told by Panasonic. The warning is about tape alignment relative to the recording heads. The warning sensor/indicator is much more sensative then what would cause a problem in the recording.
The tape path aligment needs tweaking.
