I’m a videographer here in Chicago and I’ve been getting a lot of jobs shooting HD on the Varicam and the Sony F900. I know how to light and expose for film and I pretty much apply the same rules to these two HD formats. Everytime I do one of these gigs though I’m on as a 2nd Camera or B Unit cinematographer. Basically what happens is the main cinematographer takes one of those memory cards and puts it in my camera to match his. I haven’t taken any formal training or been able to find any literature that would explain how to use the matrixes in these two cameras and set them both to get certain looks. I don’t understand what the master pedestal is and things of this nature. Can anyone recommend some books or some workshops that would demystify all these things for me? Thanks for the help. CIAO for now!!!

Buy Goodman’s Guide to The Varicam. He breaks all the technical info down in easy to understand context. Also comes with a mini cd with “looks” you can copy to a card for future use. Also, you can download pdf manuals of every camera you mentioned. Go to either the manufacturer’s website or rental house websites.

The goodman’s guide to the varicam is excellent, I also recommend the HD Expo’s Varicamps- sponsored by Panasonic and others where one gets real world training in an inside look at this camera. It is a 3 to 4 day workshop that offers about as in depth look as one can get.

I am the instructor of the post section of the workshop, and offer additional guidance on the variable frame rate functions and how those are handled in post on various platforms.

F/VESCO (Film/Video Equipment Rental Co) in Denver also offers extensive VariCam and Sony HD classes quite often. Check them out too.

Can anyone tell me if the information in Goodman’s guide is unique to the Varicam, or if it would also apply to the HDX900? I just purchased a 900 and could definitely benefit from an alternative information source to the manual Panasonic gives you. I’ve been wondering if I should go ahead and pick up the Goodman book now, or wait and see if he comes out with one specific to the HDX900. Any thoughts?

I would be happy to talk you through some of the menus, technology and terminology, such as pedestal, gamma, matrix, knee, etc. I know the Panasonic and Sony cameras well. Roscor is in Mt. Prospect with offices throughout the Midwest. We rent, sell and conduct training seminars. Varicamp and HD Expo seminars are excellent opportunities for HD training.

Feel free to contact me anytime.
