    Hello all,

Interested to see the long thread post below from the large post house in Seattle.

Those whinges are similar to the ones we get here in Melbourne Australia.

Varicam is growing in stature and as the must have camera but suffering from all the discounting from rental houses trying to keep their HDCAM Cine Alta boat anchors going.

We are renting our Varicam to others sometime and operating some jobs ourselves.

You know the jobs that come through us cut together beautifully, no offline or other old school B/S. We use FCP5 BMD. We have had to impose a few disciplines like off speed footage on separate reels. The 60fps reels coming out of the camera at 50% running time ( to allow for the preread space on the drives for the slowed down footage on ingest ) etc.

The biggest problems we have are when the larger post houses demand SD downconverts of the footage from our Varicam because Digital Betacam is “industry standard”

So the client comes back to us asking why it costs so much to dubb this “non standard” format to something the post house can see.

We are purchasing a FRC to make the camera acceptable to Avid/Smoke/Flame/blah blah systems.

    Sigh.
