    Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has figured out a workflow for cutting Varicam HD footage @25p. Currently we have footage which has been shot at 25p, and we are keen to capture via FireWire @ 25p. The plan is then to conform and online out to HD 1080 @25p via our BMD DeckLink HD Pro.

I did try the option of trying to capture via the BlackMagic 720 HD preset, and modifying that to 25fps, but it just went screwy. There was also the issue that the deck we were using would always swap its output from 720p to 1080p whenever we changed the timebase to 25fps. This meant that the deck was upsizing the footage which looked really soft.

Another issue is that all of the Final Cut Pro settings change the footage to interlaced when I change the timebase to 25fps.

Sooooo, is anyone out there working with Varicam HD and shooting at 25p?
Does 25p actually exist as a standard??
Is this just silly, and should I just give up, get all of the footage dumped to HD-CAM SR and cut from there???

    Cheers

It is also worth noting that I just did a test on a project which has been shot on Varicam HD at 720p @ 23.98 and captured via FireWire. This was then cut, moved onto our HD system, resized and output to tape at 1080p @ 23.98. It looks bloddy crisp, and was fairly quick and easy.

(oh, a test means 90 odd mins of footage)

    Noice.

    Cheers

How are you capturing it? Firewire or SDI? If it’s Firewire, don’t use a Blackmagic option. The Blackmagic settings are for SDI and analog. Use Apple’s DVCPro HD settings in the Easy Setup menu. Then switch to the Blackmagic setting so that you can view it on a monitor as you work.

It would be great to be able to capture it via FireWire, but at this stage, I havent been able to spot any settings that will allow me to work720@25p. The BlackMagic settings are the only one that allow me to capture this footage at 25fps.

I did try bastardising the Apple presets to give me a 25fps setting, but the G5 would not show any signal coming from the deck other than timecode.

I am grabbing a deck back on Tuesday morning, so I will keep having a play with it then.

Further to this, we have spotted some pixel dropouts that seem to have during the rendering process. (I havementioned this in another post this morning.)

It is a bit bizarre, and am wondering if anyone else has seen it before?

    Cheers
