    Hi All

a few weeks ago i posted sonthing re trying to capture varicam at 60/24. i thought i got round the problem by capturing the footage sdi with AJA Kona pro res 24p.

the problem has been that we have shot on the Varicam at 60/24 not 59.94/23.97. i though i’d cracked it but no .

i have FCP6 with The aja Kona Lhe runing on intel quad

i’ve captured the footage at the proress 422 (hq)24psf and about a week ago i got an error message saying that i should recompress my media or recaptur (this media is not optimized for fCP6)

i have a multi format tiime line with Proress 422 (hq)24psf and pal footage on it. it has been playing fin and then the sound slows down and it drops frames. my raid is 30% full and has an ample data rate.

as i said it plays the footage sometimes and not others. will i have to get my tapes converted to 59.94/ 23.97 or has anyone got a get out of jail free card?

    i have a deck here AJHD1200A

    can any one help?

i seem to be on this forum more than i’d like

Thanks for your help in advance

    23.98 is 24

    59.94 is 60

those are the proper frame rates that are actually captured on tape.

    Thank Walter

the FCP HD MANUAL says that there is a difference on the varicam between 60/ and 59.94 and that you should avoid filming(capturing) at 60

is there any thing you can suggest?

I’ve never heard of that, but then I don’t run the camera. I believe your topic should probably move the Varicam forum and ask those guys.

[walter biscardi] “I believe your topic should probably move the Varicam forum and ask those guys.”

Just to clarify, I mean ask them if the camera shoots a true 24 and true 60. I believe it 59.94 and 23.98 are the true frame rates and those are what we have always captured 24 and 60 to in the three years or so we’ve been editing Varicam and HDX-900 footage.

[nick Franco] “the problem has been that we have shot on the Varicam at 60/24 not 59.94/23.97.”

Are you absolutely sure- if you just used the camera settings without going into the service menu I doubt that you actually changed the frame rate to match NTSC DF timecode.

On the Varicam you have to set the camera to record at 60 hrz vs 59.94 and it is buried deep in the service menus. You cannot change this setting without knowledge of the camera, it is not a casual find, one must dig to find it.

the answer is CT- it will allow you to nudge the timebase from 24 – 23.98.

    Hi Gary

Yes our DOP did set it at 60 hrz vs 59.94 as at the time we felt that true 24 frams was better to go back to a film print.

i’m kicking my self. i have a big target on my pants if anyone else wants to kick me too

The first time I shot on a varicam I found the service menu… wasnt burried too deep,, and the joker who had the camera before me found it too and switched it to 60hrtz (amongst other things) and I had to switch it back before shooting.

Not as easy as the average sony service menu or the 900’s,, but having no manual or previous usage of it, it took me only a couple minutes to open it up.

Hi Guys looks like i’ve cracked it. the deck has converted it to the right frame rate. the trouble i had earlier seems to be that the were a couple of unmarked scense that were shot at 48fps

    Thanks for all your help

    Nick
