  variable speed problem with motion tab

  When I have my clip loaded in the viewer if I go into the speed part of the motion tab I can see the line goes from the bottom left to the top right, as you would expect. However, when I load a clip from there into the timeline and double-click that and go into it’s motion tab, under the speed part there is just a flat line and I am unable to make any changes to the keyframes.
  Any ideas appreciated.
