A friend asked me how to do an effect, and I’m a bit stumped.

I looked at one of the trailers for Silent Hill, which can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V4Y6vBW3vc

It appears to be variable density noise, with the greatest density and largest noise particle being attracted to the darkest areas, while white areas are left alone.

Is anyone aware of a prebuilt filter or a procedure to do this?

    Thanks,
    Brandt

It looks like the grain simulation in AE7. Under Noise&Grain, use the grain setting. It doesn’t look variabe to me. It just looks like they added the grain before doing high contrast color correction so that when the whites blow out, the grain blows out with it so it seems like it’s more prominent in the darker areas.
