  • Using X-Refs and why are they losing their textures?

Wondering if I can get some opinions.

I have a scene where many human (rigged) characters are being positioned into different objects…their bodies make up the shape of the object.

I have a total of 8 human characters and I thought it best to master each of them in their own file, then X-ref them into a scene where I can position them and tweak some of the limb positions. I will be using these characters in other files as well.

All of a sudden, several of the X-Ref characters lost their textures…they went all grey. Other were fine. I hit “Reload” with no resulting fix. The texture tags show up as question marks.

-First, Is this the way you would all set up such a scene? I am using X-refs in case I need to tweak weighting, mesh or hair so it makes sense to me to use a reference of the master character file that I can use in all the other scenes but man, as wonderful as X-refs can be, they can be a pain!

-Second, any idea why the textures are disappearing?

    Thanks,
    Brian

Just the obvious off the bat – are all the textures in their proper folders? – I get so involved sometimes I just say “ya ya” to cinema wanting to put the texture somewhere, that I don’t realize that it’s put it in the wrong folder. Just add a whatever folder they are in to your preferences list of texture map locations. (under edit/preferences/files)

Second, are you using R15 or before? We had a terrible time with that reload button never working. Seems to have been fixed in R16+

Finally – any cloners involved? We’ve had bad luck with xref and cloners. They work for a while and then they seem to loose the link. Even a cloner inside a character’s heirarchy will do it or visa versa.

    Hey Steve,

Thanks a million for the guesswork. The textures are all put into the Tex folder appropriately. I am however using cloners, which have proven to be quite maddening in some cases. I hadn’t realized there were issues with using cloners and X-refs. That being the case, and knowing I’m limited to R16, is there a workaround, am I going about this the right way, what would you do to resolve this?

    Thanks again.
