  • Using .vob files in Premiere?

Okay – here’s my current situation. I’m working on a personal project – just for fun / practicie in editing and so I’m taking some movies and making “music videos” if you will, so it’s probably not the most legal project out there, but I don’t really plan to do anything with it other than for myself. I thought I had it all figured out…

I used SmartRipper to pull the .vob files off the DVD
BeSweet to take the 5.1 surround sound audio and split it into 6 individual wav files so I could pull out the dialogue and still have that playing over the other music in the project (since there was background music in the DVD)
And then use VirtualDub to convert the .vob into .avi.

Except… I’ve found out that I don’t know what clips I want to use yet and I’ve found out that coverting the .vob files will result in me having about 350 gig being added to my hard drive… which is a little bit of a problem since the drive isn’t *quite* that large. (I canceled the process on one of 7 vobs from the movie that was 3% done with 1.5gig already created)

So are there any plugins that allow Premiere to work directly with the .vob files or are there any (preferably free, although it is possible that I’d shell out some cash for something that I might use in future projects) options to convert vob in a more… size conscious matter? The only thing I could think of was to maybe reduce the quality of the AVI coming out of VirtualDub but couldn’t find any options.

I’m very appreciative of any suggestions that might be out there. Thanks…

You would have to convert the VOB files to Mpeg2 to insure the proper header and use a third party plug-in for Premiere like https://www.mainconcept.com , or convert the files to AVI which are large.

Wait a moment here. Ripping to DV-AVI or Microsoft DV only used a litle under 13GB per hour. So even using a two hour movie to play with, you would only use 25GB or so.

You must be ripping to uncompressed, which is unnecessary.

Better yet, frame serve your mpeg to PPRO. Saves on space and logistics. I use DGIndex to create a reference file that I load into VFapi, which creates a virtual avi that I can then edit on PPRO.

    Here’s what I use:

DGIndex to read the MPEG and create an index file (*.d2v) which I then open in VFAPI Reader. VFAPI works as a frame server, creating a virtual avi file which can then be edited in PP or AE or anything. Google DGIndex and VFAPI and you’ll find the downloads – both freeware.

Doh! I knew something obvious was missing… I love Divx… approx. 800 mb for the 2 hour film. Amazing.

    Thanks!!!

Yeah – but much lower quality – right?

    720×480 at 448kbps

    Certainly good enough for me!
