Using two USB external hard drives to edit video
i am editing video in FCP and using three different camera angels. multiclip. i don’t have a firewire connection at this point have absolutely no money. but i DO have two usb external hard drives. i’m thinking of splitting up the 3 videos between two usb drives. will FCP go totally haywire while using two hard drives at a time, or will it be more efficient than using 3 videos on one usb drive?

I got bad news for you Anthony…
Since there’s just a single USB bus, and since it’s handling your mouse and keyboard already, and since USB can’t typically provide the sustained throughput necessary for even a single layer of video, and since you’re trying to essentially edit three layers as multiclips, you might as well try to run your video off two USB drives because you’re probably going to crash and burn anyway. So what the heck? It won’t help in any way to run off two drives, but it might be fun to try anyway.

so basically i should stop goofin around and get a hard drive w/ firewire 800. got it. thank you. no wonder editing video is like pulling teeth.

USB isn’t going to work well at all. It is not recommended for video editing, period. USB doesn’t offer the sustained throughput of Firewire. Two USB drives running off one USB bus isn’t going help you much.

Good idea Anthony. Video does tend to tax computer technology to it’s limits, and we always seem to find bigger and better video to keep pressing our bigger and better computer technology.

May I say from experience, that any value learned from this thread will be pulled by management at Creative Cow, if this continues.

Alright well I bought a 1TB firewire 800 drive. And shit is still acting slow. I am doing multiclip with 3 camera angles with 2 of the cameras are 720p 30fps and then one was converted from a tape capture into the exact same format as the 720p. Everytime it hits the converted cam, shit drops frame and gets wacky, saying, “General Error” and the drop frame warning window also pops up.
I am using a MBP w/ 2.4Ghz and 4GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
The external firewire drive is a WD My Book Studio Edition.
Shit is still so slow. ALL I WANT TO DO IS EDIT VIDEO. Had no idea it takes this much money and effort to just edit some video. Feeling like I should stay with being a sound engineer, feeling like video is not for me. I have not yet got to feel what it is like to use multiclip properly. Feel like I will never get there. Feel like my videos that I shoot will have to be sent to some ‘expert’ who will charge me tons of money to change camera angles and a few extra things here and there (which is all I want to do).
Feel like my business will never get off the ground if I don’t overcome this problem. Feel like I’ll have to buy MORE RAM and MORE MEMORY and a RAID in order to just edit some video.
