OK character animators…I am about to hit the ceiling on this one.

I have a rigged character and have created a motion clip out of a keyframed walk cycle. I wanted to add hand and arm gestures because the character is talking as it’s walking so I create a new motion clip. If I put the gestures on one layer above the walk cycle, the character squishes down into a mess. I have selected the heirarchy appropriately but the gestures clip uses controllers that have been used by the walk cycle as well so I don’t uncheck those.

I have made the gestures clip Absolute and still no improvement. Basically, I cannot get one clip to play nicely with the other.

What is going on and how can I make this work?

I’ve also tried Animation layers but in dealing with motion clips, it won’t let me see the keyframes to edit it later.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Unfortunately I don’t use the motion system enough to offer definitive held, but one thing I do recall is that, once you switch from absolute to relative or v.v., you can’t go back without screwing it up.

Hmmm, that’s interesting. It helps to know that. Thanks Adam.

However, Absolute is not working the way I need it to anyway.

Dang. I’ve run into problems the few times I used the system, so I understand your frustration.

Yea, there’s definitely something messed up with the Motion System. I cannot get two clips to work and I cannot mix keyframed animation with motion clip animation properly. What would seem logical becomes a mess when working with this and from the looks of the Motion System around here, no one seems to be using it….? Now I see why. It’s as though it was implemented in a half-developed and untested state, then forgotten.

I found it to be unreliable and undependable when working with more than one motion clip and it seems if you want to make a character do anything with a motion clip, you have to use ONLY motion clips, not use keyframe animation for some objects within a structure and others in a motion clip within the same structure. Man, this is frustrating!
