Tentacle makes hardware that feeds cameras TC, they can jam sync together and can be controlled with phone app. We do not need the software for this workflow. We use software when we have been given footage beyond our control such as the case of the OP. The software analyzes all media and allows you to designate an audio track as a timecode track, will then sync all files accordingly and then create a XML file which can be brought into PPro with all in sync.
We do not always have the authority nor the privilege of dictating what we will be given or how it will be produced. We use Pluraleyes and Tentacle – these 2 programs have allowed us to deal with just about everything to make our job easier, and yes, it does “enable” others to continue in their flawed, lazy, unprofessional workflows. I will stipulate that there are some times when the proper way to do production is too limiting for some people in some instances as they try to deliver a valid and important “message” or communication.
The only case where you would use Tentacle hardware and software together is when you have a camera without a TC input and you would record that TC on an audio channel and then use the software to designate that audio as TC.
