    Hello all,

I’ve created a few subclips in Premiere, moved them to the timeline and then copied them into AE for some effects editing, however, once AE has been closed and reopened, it doesn’t recognise the location of the subclips. It appears I have to edit them and render them out in the same sitting, which also means If i want to re-edit clips later I need to copy them from Premiere every time. Is this correct? I can understand the theory in that there’s no hard file for each subclip but I thought I’d better ask.

    Thank you

Subclips are not files. They are just references to main file. You can create zillions of subclips, but no additional file will be created.
If you put your subclips into timeline in PREMIERE, select them, hit Cmd-c, go to AE open comp and hit Cmd-v – the layers will be created in your comp. In the project panel you will see all the required files. There may be less files than layers. Maybe only one if all your subclips were created from the same master clip. They all will refer to the master clip from which your subclips have been created.
You can save your AE file, reopen it, and everything should be how it was before closing. If it is different – I don’t have a clue what could happen.

Thank you for your reply Bartek, as I said (albeit badly) I’m aware that subclips don’t generate new files. When copying a subclip into AE, the parent file doesn’t appear in the project window – only the subclip, however, when it says that the file is missing it’s looking for the parent file, even if I manually add the parent file to the project window it doesn’t recognise. I need some way for AE to recognise the subclips are from the parent file 🙁
