Using stock footage in demo reel to tell a story?

I don’t see what not. You’re advertising as an editor, not a cinematographer. If that stock footage of a truck shows your skill at replacing a logo on the side, that shows value to your client. I may put a disclaimer like “Some stock footage obtained for editing and visual effects demonstration” so they don’t think you’ve worked for huge clients if you haven’t yet.

It might or might not be okay, even if you make it clear you’re using stock. there are stock sources that might give you a break on stuff for a demo reel. Have you looked at Creative Commons s a source yet? There are also buy-out libraries of stock footage that can be pretty cheap.

There’s also the option of finding someone on Craig’s or whatever to shoot stuff just for you, on your budget.

You may be able to put together a couple of shoots with other artists to get the footage you need. If you can find a videographer, sound man, stylist and/or whomever else you might need you could get some good stuff.

I’m a still image photographer primarily, but we do test shoots regularly with people who all just need a body of showable work to pull from.

Yes, I will be learning in school next semester. I think it will be both shooting and editing. I’ve checked out that website. They have some great stuff, but because everything is in HD, I have to find a way to save all the videos I need somewhere. Thanks!

Instead of using traditional stock footage to make your reel, get footage from us! https://www.EditStock.com. We have uncut dailies from films, music videos, and commercial. I actually developed the site in part exactly for the reason you mentioned above.
