Using Sony HVR-Z5U with PP CS4 – Hard drive / Memory Unit
Anyone have experience using the Sony HVR-Z5U with PP CS4 and the Hard Drive or Memory Unit? I am looking at getting this camera for my company, but I haven’t had much luck finding anything explicit on this subject.
I am looking at the ease of use for either the Memory Unit for CF cards (HVRMRC1K) or the 60 GB Hard Drive (HVRDR60). I’ve only ever used miniDV and DV tapes using Log and Capture in FCP, which was a little over 3 years ago now. The last time I edited in Premiere was way back in 2002-3.
We would be shooting demo and instructional videos @ about 2-10 minutes each for our products to go on our site and perhaps ship with the product. We would also be doing some training videos @ about 30+ minutes. Any comments on your experience with these units (even it is with a different Sony camcorder that uses these units) would be very helpful!

For these type of videos, you may want to look at the HPX 170 instead, which is in a similar price bracket.
While the AV HVR-Z5U is not a bad camera, the format in the HPX is superior and very Premiere friendly, unlike HDV.

Thanks for the reply. The only problem is the 170 is tapeless – we want the Z5 to archive miniDV tapes. Have you worked with the Z5 Memory Unit files with Premiere Pro?

I use the HVR-MRC1 with other Sony cams, I don’t bother with tape unless I’m using a small cam like Sony’s HCx or Canon HVxx, I currently archive to Harddisk and bluray data data disk. I use 32gig compact flash cards with the recording unit, you can get over 140min per card, the cards are formated Fat32 but the included Sony software(PC) with download and stitch the file segments together, with a normal card reader you can download a 32gig card in about 30mins, there are faster card readers but can be expensive, but its only a 1/4 of what it takes to do a tape.
I’ve used the Z5 and Z7 on shoots but decided not to buy for myself as the MRC1 works with a FX1/Z1 either dual record or CF only and Sony is coming out with other tapeless cams like the NX and AX
