Using Smoothcam filter in sequence w/ 1080p & 720p footage
Hi, I recently shot a bunch of video on the Canon 7D, using the camera’s 1080p/23.98 and 720p/60p modes. I shot this entirely on the subway, so I am considering using FCP’s Smoothcam filter to alleviate some of the shakiness in some of the shots.
I plan on mixing the 1080p footage with the 720p, using the 720p footage (overcranked) as slow-motion. The final video will be exported as 720p.
My question is, theoretically, if I edit the whole video in a 720p timeline and apply the Smoothcam filter to only the 1080p footage, will I not suffer any real loss in resolution for those 1080p clips assuming the filter doesn’t scale them dramatically?
My rationale for this is that since 1080p footage in a 720p timeline is 1.5x larger than the 720p output, this should give me a fair amount of leeway to scale the 1080p footage, which is essentially how the Smoothcam filter works.
I hope I’ve explained this clearly. It’s a bit complicated and not very easy to explain verbally, but I’d really appreciate any insight anyone might have.
