I’ve only ever done rotoscoping in a fairly basic way using AE. I saw the Silhouette FX plug-in mentioned on the forums as a less tedious way to roto. I’ve downloaded the demo to see if I can do a better/faster/less tedious job of fixing some clips where I need to “disappear” a vase directly behind an interview subject’s head, which, of course, moves in each frame as she talks. Can someone point me in the direction of a quick and dirty tutorial for Silhouette FX roto’ing so I can figure out if this is any easier than the tedious job it wd be in AE? Just not sure how to make the thing go.

    Any help appreciated!

hey, the manual and help files for Silhouette are very straightforward. If you do alot of roto, it’s worth purchasing. It’s also got some great paint tools and an amazing tracker. They have Silhouette where I work, and I picked up on it in less than a day. I’m not sure what the price difference is between the standalone and the AE plugin, but I can tell you that the stand alone syncs up perfectly with AE, Shake, and Flame.

The new Silhouette Paint plug-in for After Effects shipped last week.
It is designed for paint and cloning on video and includes an integrated Mocha planar tracking engine.

The best way to learn is to go through the 5 Getting Started videos from 01-05:

As far as differences, you can find this comparison chart. The plug-in is designed for Paint while the full application has many more features, but is more $$. https://borisfx.com/products/silhouette-paint/#compare

The annual subscription for Silhouette Paint for Adobe is $195/yr. Works in Premiere Pro as well.
