Using Shockwave files in FCP
After a day of trying to import animated .swf files into FCP 4.5 I’m stymied. Neither FCP nor Quicktime would recognise them. Shockwave has me stumped. I’m working in OS Tiger on a 1Ghz Dual G4. I had the author resend me the files converted to .mov – Quicktime will play them – but FCP imports them as mere 2 frame clips. Livetype will import them and play them as designed but instead of a graphic on transparent background in alpha format – i get them on a white background – and this applies when I Import from livetype to FCP. I’d be a very happy person if someone could give me an explanation for how to work with shockwave animations. I’m really missing something here…

Sorry, but a .swf file is not a Shockwave file, its a Flash animation file. Not 100% certain, but I think Sorenson Squeeze may provide a clean Flash to QT conversion. Check out http://www.sorenson.com for a free trial.

You can screen capture it with a great package called SnapXproZ – which will give you QT files, once captured.

Shockwave Flash files (.swf) or just “flash” files will open in QT. From quicktime, just export them as whatever codec you like. You’ll need QT pro to export. Works wonderfully.
Drag the file onto the QT icon in your dock or wherever, or right click on the file and choose “open with…”

Thanks for the heads up about .swf as flash files. I did try suggested fixes and my latest QT 7.0.4 won’t import or play the .swf files.
My main concern is to understand why the flash files, now converted to .mov files by the author, will play in Quicktime but import into FCP as mere 2 frame clips. And more – why will they work in Livetype and export correctly into FCP – but the alpha transparency has become white? My problem now is being rid of the white background. Again – I’d really appreciate some education!
