Using Screen Record file in FCP
Posted by Richard Martz on May 6, 2010 at 10:27 pmI just did a screen record and thought I would be able to use it in FCP7. But when I try to import, the file is not recognized by FCP and it won’t import. How can I do this?

May 6, 2010 at 11:22 pmDude first off your last little comment there about thanks a lot apple lots of people are having this problem. Is not nessisary. As a editor it is your job to know what codec video you are working with and also to know if that codec is a proper editing codec.
The built in screen record in snow leopard is i believe don’t in h.264. Which is NOT a proper editing codec so you will need to convert it to a proper editing codec before editing it.

May 7, 2010 at 1:46 amSorry but why are you blaming apple for something that is the editors responsibility.

May 7, 2010 at 5:17 amOSX SL screen record movies are not directly editable. Thank Apple that you can even do this. Other systems and OSes make you run around circles for this.
Anyway, open the screen record movie in QT Player 7. And export it in a format that you need in your edit. Even Compressor does this. Mind that the size will swell up considerably.

May 8, 2010 at 1:22 pmOK.OK. I heartily apologize for my slam on Apple for not making the output file from Quicktime’s screen record feature compatible with FCP. I take complete responsibility for my own personal failures in this regard and I propose to never let this happen again in this life or the next.

May 8, 2010 at 2:31 pmYes. But Apple markets itself as being the easiest to use and the most ubiquitously accessible of all hardware and software companies out there. This was a miscue on their part. Saying that I should be grateful for any capability at all is just not real world and does not conform to their promise. We want software programs that work well without a lot of hassle. Making a software program that does not play with every other program in their repertoire is not acceptable to us as consumers when they expressly market their product on this basis!.

But FCP is NOT in any way a “consumer” product. It is a professional level software. Its NOT a point and click software, and its not meant to be. Thats why Apple also has iMovie, that is Apples “consumer” video editing software.
