using Pro Res Proxy in Final Cut Pro 6?
Posted by Tim Seley on December 8, 2009 at 8:34 pmAnyone had any luck with the new pro res proxy in FCP 6 or am I SOL? It will play alright, but no multiclip playback, real time rendering options, etc…

December 8, 2009 at 8:41 pmThat codec was designed for FCP 7. It is built to recognize and deal with that codec. FCP 6 is not. It won’t work properly in FCP 6. Either upgrade to FCP 7, or use a codec that is compatible with FCP 6.

What? I don’t get what you mean. ProRes Proxy is available in an update to the Studio package…FCS3 that includes FCP 7. A paid upgrade. You don’t get it when you do a simple update of FCP 6.0.x to something like 6.0.6. It isn’t part of an FCP 6 update.

December 8, 2009 at 9:45 pmI didn’t buy FCS3 but I’ve definitely got the new Pro Res options.

December 8, 2009 at 9:53 pmAre you the only one with access to that machine? Because people on these forums ask questions like yours, and people actually suggest “just copy the codecs from FCP 7 to FCP 6 and there you go!” And they show up, but there is no RT with them, and they are problematic. Perhaps someone did the same on that machine?

December 8, 2009 at 9:59 pmI saw a couple posts with that info, but nope its just my laptop. And I haven’t installed anything manually. My guess was that it was installed with a compressor or QT update. Maybe the update was really geared more towards simple playback instead of full on usage?

Will stick with OFFLINE RT HD Codec in FCP6.

April 24, 2010 at 8:22 pmDoes anyone know a way to convert ProRes proxy to anything else without having FCP7/FCS3??? QT 10 will read the files and allow FCP6.x to transcode them but, what if you did not have Snow Leopard or FCS3? Then what? Can Avid read ProRes Proxy with new AMA? What about Premiere or Vegas. Ouch!

April 24, 2010 at 8:30 pmTo view ProRes movies, even Proxy, all you need is QT 7.6. That has the decoder built in. Any machine running QT 7.6 will be able to view ProRes movies. So you should be able to convert to another format from that.
And yes, Avid touts that Media Composer 5.0 can read and work with ProRes Proxy files. But that version isn’t out yet.
